Mary Wood shoots hard from the top of the box after a fantastic solo breakaway.

The U 14 Girls rep soccer team – the Storm, as they are known amongst their devoted fans – took their A-game over to North Vancouver on Sept. 18 to meet the always tough North Shore Girls Apex team.

The rain had stopped, the sun was shining bright in the sky and the amazing turf field invited something awesome – the girls looked hungry to play hard.

The Storm kicked into full coordinated team play from the start, a concept that eluded them last year, leading them to become known as a “second half team” – but not on this day.

Apex played well throughout the game – a worthy opponent, to be sure. They were a passing team, which made the Storm rally quickly to counter most of their offensive efforts.

The first half saw hard work and good verbal skills come into play leading to a 1-0 score for the Storm, with many fantastic shots on net. The score should have been higher but the tension needed to build to please the fans. After the half, the dominant ball control and first to the ball tactic – which still needs work – helped the girls put two more in, making it a 3-0 game.

Only in the final minutes of the game was the Apex able to capitalize on some exhausted Storm players to put one in and finalize the score at 3-1.

The entire Storm team played wonderful soccer; everyone was glad they came out to play and it showed. The girls really made themselves and those in the stands feel that this will be a year to become one wicked Storm.
