This past week in fastpitch, the Raiders and Custom Flooring began to separate themselves from the rest of the pack in the race for top spot.
On Wednesday night, the Raiders defeated Lon’s Gun Show 8–5, thanks to a strong outing on the mound by Therin Hemstalk and clutch hitting from Keynon Brown and Brett Trefry. The Raiders kept their momentum going on Friday night, dismantling the Bears 11–0 in a dominant performance.
Also on Friday, Custom Flooring used their strong bats to overpower Lon’s Gun Show, despite playing shorthanded. Mike Moriarty opened the scoring with a grand slam, followed by home runs from Robbie and Josh Gray. Custom went on to win 13–5.
On Monday night, Lon’s Gun Show sought revenge in a rematch with Custom, but the hot bats continued. Mike stayed red-hot, starting the scoring with a three-run homer, and Josh added a solo shot later in the game. There were also some defensive gems on display: Brandon Elsdon turned in a highlight-reel double play with an over-the-shoulder catch at shortstop followed by a spinning throw to first, while Lon’s Gun Show executed a rare strikeout-throw-out double play when Liam Allen gunned down a runner at second to end the inning. Custom took an early lead and held on for a 14–10 win, with the father-son pitching duo of Rick and Jim Peers securing the victory.
Upcoming action takes place Wednesday, Aug. 6, at both Brothers and Hackett Parks, followed by league playoffs at Brothers Park on Aug. 9 and 10.
