Two athletes bring home medals

Fencing

The first Canada Cup of the season was held this past weekend in Richmond, and Sunshine Coast fencing talent was on full display as two athletes were able to bring medals back to the Coast.

Dylan Styles took bronze in U15. He is just 12 years old and showing great promise.

Fynn Mansbridge-Fafard, who fences for SCFC and Dynamo Fencing Club, claimed silver in U17 Epee, losing in the final to Nikola Damjanovic of Toronto.

Due to an injury, Fynn withdrew from U15 Epee to save his strength for U20 Epee, where he picked up more valuable points for the season with a 13th place finish. Also collecting points in U20 was SCFC fencer Caelen Meyers with a 15th place finish.

Points are awarded in U17 and U20 events at three Canada Cup events and two North American Cups between now and the end of November.

Fynn will be travelling across Canada and the U.S. this year fighting for a spot on Team Canada, which will be determined at the final event of the season in Kansas City. The top eight ranked finishers will qualify for the European Cup in Paris, where fencers will be fighting for eight spots to advance to the World Cup in Mexico and Pan Am Championships from there. Currently Fynn of Roberts Creek is off to a great start finishing the weekend ranked second in Canada for the 2015/16 season. Other notable places were Mikaly Newton, eighth, and Landseer Enga, 13th in U15 Foil.
