Topsy turvy start to second half

Opening my email here in sunny Mexico, I was shocked to find that both the men's and women's leagues had turned topsy turvy. Two teams that had never been in first place are now in the two top spots.

IGA Blazers' win over Fusion edged them just ahead of CALs Crushers, who still have a game in hand. In their short-handed win over Fusion, Blazers goals came from Ashley Taylor with three and Jackie Ostrovski with a pair assisted by her daughter Karlene. The following week Fusion came back with a 3-1 win over the Blazers with goals from Chara Krangle, Leslie Cooper and Christie Totten. Mary Joseph showed she could put balls in the net no matter what colour jersey she wears, in her first game as a Blazer.

CALs also beat Marshall Mayhem 2-0, with Xenichen Ya Yas and Gibsons Pigs sidelined due to the frozen field. In the men's league, with their 3-0 win over Gibsons United, Halfmoon Bay also climbed into first place. HMB's strikes came from Greg Stinson and Adam Vanderwoerd and a deflection off of a stunned John Rogers. HMB part-timers Dale Schweighardt and Dave Marsh were also called into active duty for the win.

CPU dropped from top spot after their 4-3 loss to the Sechelt Chiefs. Chiefs look poised to tear through the standings, as they got a hat trick in the debut of long awaited striker Scotty 'Babyface' Johnson. CPU got two goals from Martin Blackwell and a single from Kurt Vernon. Pigs were able to get four on the IGA Selects after Eric Pinfold was injured out of the match. Ken Campbell sent up four fabulous balls converted by Dean Forbes, Darryl Germaine, Steve Crawford and defender Scott Hague, who left behind his defensive duties to sneak upfield and score.

John Palmers' Pender squad beat Wolves 4-0.
