Tessa May helps pull in provincial, national golds

Women's Volleyball

Tessa May, a 2015 graduate from Elphinstone Secondary, has wrapped up her youth career in U18 Division 1 Women’s Volleyball with gold medal wins at both the B.C. Provincial and Canadian National Championships.

Tessa plays for the BCO Volleyball Club based in North Vancouver. A Roberts Creek resident, Tessa has been travelling to Vancouver attending the North Shore Volleyball Academy as well as training and competing with both Team BC and the BCO Volleyball Club for the last four years. With BCO she has had the opportunity to travel to the U.S. and compete in some of the top youth tournaments in North America, including Las Vegas and Tulsa, Okla.

All the hard work and training paid off this year with her U18 BCO Elites team winning the provincial championship title at the Richmond Oval on April 19. Tessa was the leading offensive player, scoring the most points for her team during the tournament, and was chosen as one of the tournament all stars.

The team then travelled to Calgary for the national championships May 17 to 19. Calgary played host to over 10,000 athletes from across Canada in four age groups over the six-day period. BCO Elites were ranked second in the country in U18 Division 1 and after a tough semi-final match against Manitoba (ranked third) they played Calgary Dinos (ranked first) in the final.

It was a strong finish for the team as they swept Calgary in two sets and for the first time in BCO history won gold and the Canadian National Championship Banner.

Tessa was once again chosen as one of the six tournament All Stars.

She would like to send a shout out to the various teachers from Roberts Creek Elementary and Elphinstone Secondary  who have encouraged and supported her efforts along the way as she prepares for the next phase of her career, where she joins her sister Devon in representing Simon Fraser University on the women’s volleyball team. SFU is the only Canadian University that competes in the highly competitive NCAA conference in the United States and she looks forward to her upcoming season.
