Team Canada takes fifth in Pan Am Games

Roberts Creek’s Kyla Richey was top scorer when Team Canada defeated the Colombians on June 21 at the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao.

The score was 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 25-9) for Canada, with Richey contributing 15 points.

On the same day, the team then defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23) in the match for fifth place.

A press release on the Volleyball Confederation website (norceca.net) reported that the Canadians held the advantages in blocks (18-12) and also in aces (7-3). Each team committed 21 unforced errors.

Jaimie Thibault led the winners with 19 points, including six blocks and four aces, followed by Tabhita Love with 16. Kyla Richey contributed 13 points in the victory and Lucille Charuk added 12, including five blocks.

“My team played with a lot of discipline and kept calm at the key moments of the match, thinking about each point,” Team Canada coach Arnd Ludwig said. “That was the key for us winning today’s match, very important for us.”
