Rising golf star Keenan Flemming from Davis Bay helped Team BC bring home a gold medal from the 2015 Western Canada Games in Fort McMurray, Alta.
“It was so much fun – the whole tournament. We just ate and played golf. It was the most fun I think I’ve ever had,” Keenan said.
Three rounds of tournament golf were played last Friday through Sunday. The games ended on Aug. 16.
Keenan shot a 78 for Round 1, 81 for Round 2 and 74 for Round 3. Team BC won gold and Keenan placed ninth individually.
“I did very well on the front nine, but then the back nine were not good at all for me,” Keenan said. “It’s a very narrow golf course and I lost a couple golf balls on the back nine, which cost me.”
Keenan’s father James said that his son was being too hard on himself.
“He actually played really well,” James Flemming said. “His standards are just a little higher than us normal folk.”
Keenan, 16, started golfing in tournaments just over two years ago. He has competed in a number of tournaments, including the Pacific edition of Golf Canada CN Future Links at Pheasant Glen on Vancouver Island.
He finished 15th out of 70 golfers at CN Future Links, where he caught the attention of the Team BC coach and was invited to play in the Western Games.
Keenan moved on to the BC Juveniles Championship in Kelowna this week. His first practice round was on Monday.
“I think he’s had so much travel now that instead of the usual dread about going back to school, he’s kind of looking forward to being home,” James Flemming said. “But he’s enjoyed it enormously.”
British Columbia came in first at the Western Games with 134 gold, 85 silver and 61 bronze medals for a total of 280. Alberta was a not so close second with 226 total medals.
