Members of the Sunshine Coast Special Olympics swim team, newly dubbed the Orcas, all achieved personal best times at the swim meet in Richmond’s Watermania on Sunday, Jan. 22.
It was a noisy and sometimes hectic environment with so many excited people in one place, all talking to one another and crowding their coaches for last-minute advice before and after each race. Despite this, no one from the Sunshine Coast let themselves get frazzled.
The Orcas all performed with gusto and walked away with new personal best times.
The whole team went for a much-deserved dinner at the nearby Old Spaghetti Factory where they ate a yummy dinner topped off with ice cream.
The Orcas – Amber Fenton, Stephie Malcom, Theresa Bystead, Summer Labecki, Stephanie Rogers, Paul Davis, Lindsay Pearson, Genny Verge and Micheal Oswald – said they found it to be the most organized and fun pre-provincial swim meet they have ever attended.
The athletes thanked coaches Cathy Verge, Garry Rogers, Catherine Duncombe, Trevor Beckman, Daryl Lowey and Robert Wotton for assisting the whole team in reaching and surpassing their goals.
