This past weekend – Nov. 29 – the Sunshine Coast Storm U13 girls hosted the number one team in the league, currently the North Shore Kodiaks, at the temporary Shirley Macey field.
Their rivalry was born several weeks ago through a hard one-point loss to the Kodiaks, which spelled revenge in any language. The girls knew who they were up against, they knew who they were last weekend, and clearly they needed to learn the lessons and come out with everything they had, and they did.
After some fantastic passes from Charlotte to the middle, Teagan darted in her speedy way, leading to a shot by Jasmine which rebounded to a perfectly positioned Ella who made the over-arc right into the net, putting the Storm first on the board, 1-0.
More phenomenal plays from the likes of Koenn and Lauryn, some great power from Aila not giving up, and Piper diligently stopping crucial attacks made sure the Kodiaks worked hard. And they made it a tie game, putting even more of a thrill on the plate.
The Storm did not in any way break the cycle of high energy play that sometimes comes with a evening of the score; in fact, they poured it on. Clara seemed to have decided today was the day to show the scouts what’s up and streaked time after time through whatever was in her way – making shot after shot – finally right where it counts to give the girls a 2-1 lead.
Only after a cluster in front of the net – where the ball remained a little too long – did the Kodiaks get lucky and tie it up 2-2 for the final score.
The dream continues, the passion remains and the Storm is rejuvenated, looking forward to hearing from the wise ones, coaches Trina and Zoey, on how real soccer players make good use of mistakes and celebrate improvement.
