Three Sunshine Coast Special Olympics athletes will be competing in the 30th annual BC Summer Games in Abbotsford on July 21 to 24.

Michael Beckman, Genny Verge and Amber Maher will showcase their skills as they compete in Special Olympics divisions alongside more than 3,200 young athletes, coaches, and officials from around the province.

“The BC Games are always an exciting opportunity for athletes and coaches to compete and learn,” Special Olympics BC (SOBC) manager Shawn Fevens said.

“Our athletes get a lot out of competing and being part of the BC Games environment, and they put on a great demonstration of their skills as they participate alongside the mainstream athletes.”

Beckman and Verge will be competing in the swim competition and Maher will participate in the athletics competitions, including the 100m, 200m, shot put, and long jump. Beckman will take part in 50m free, 100m free, 50m back, and 100m backstroke events. Verge will race in the 50m free, 100m free, 200m free, 50m back, 100m back, and 100m individual medley.

Cathy Verge will accompany the team to Abbotsford and will coach the BC Special Olympics swim team.

The BC Summer Games provides a competitive multi-sport environment that supports the development of athletes, coaches, and officials as they move on to higher levels of competition.

These BC Games are distinct from SOBC Games, which are provincial games hosted by SOBC solely for SOBC athletes. SOBC athletes have been participating in the generic BC Games for 12 years.

Good luck and congratulations to all the athletes on being selected to represent your community!
