Athletes from both Sechelt and Gibsons Special Olympic basketball teams took part in a skills camp at Elphinstone Secondary on Saturday, Oct. 1, with 24 people participating.
Players from the Douglas College Women’s Basketball Team along with their coach took the athletes through a rigorous warm-up involving running, passing, dribbling and layups, followed by multiple skill-building activities.
The camp culminated in a game of athletes versus the Douglas women and the Gibsons and Sechelt coaches.
This is the second time Douglas College women’s team has conducted such a camp on the Coast, thanks to the dedication of team member Ellen Fallis.
“I really enjoy the sport of basketball and teaching it,” Fallis said.
When Fallis was in Grade 12 at Elphinstone, she volunteered with Special Olympics Sunshine Coast track program. By the time she was in Douglas College, her brother Callum Fallis was also helping to coach the Gibsons Special O B-ball team. Fallis was familiar with how Special Olympics worked and it was her idea to make the trip to the Sunshine Coast.
Douglas College Women’s team is offering basketball camps to all local communities represented by the members of the team. So far the team has travelled to the home communities of players from Kitimat and Smithers.
Thanks to the coaches of the Sechelt and Gibsons teams as well as Pat Stuart for helping to make this a fun-filled event.
