Halfmoon Bay's Kendyl Smith snagged a silver medal at last weekend's B.C. Winter Games in Cranbrook.
Kendyl, 13, won the medal after her zone five team (Vancouver-Squamish) placed second in the team category.
In her individual results, Kendyl was fifth in the girls draw. In her first match she lost in three sets in a best-of-five match against the second seed in the tournament. This loss put her into the consolation side of the draw, where she won her next three matches 3-0, 3-0 and 3-1.
Kendyl said she had a great time at her first Winter Games competition, meeting a lot of great people and gaining memories to last a lifetime.
In speed skating, Sechelt's Nicole Maseja also had a great games experience. She didn't manage to earn a medal, but achieved four top 10 finishes. She finished sixth in the 500m, eighth in the 777m and 1,500m and 10th in the 1,000m.Nicole started skating in Sechelt with the Pacific Blades Speed Skating Club, and is now living and training in Maple Ridge with former Olympic Eden Donatelli Green.Another youth from the Coast also attended the games. Madison Shoemaker from Halfmoon Bay, whom Coast Reporter has profiled on several occasions in tennis, was a delegate to the B.C. Olympic and Paralympic Youth Leadership Academy.
More than 1,900 athletes from around the province competed in this year's games, participating in 27 sports in venues in Kimberly and Cranbrook.
The team from Thomp-son-Okanagan finished first overall in the medal count with 65, including 19 gold. Fraser Valley was second with 47 medals, including 18 gold. Vancouver-Squamish was third with 43 medals, including 18 gold.
