Sunshine Coast Skating Club members have kicked off the 2008/09 season.
After travelling to Burnaby for the last two and a half months, club members are excited to be back training on the Coast. Coach Lesleigh Farr is extremely busy planning the fall season and teaching summer school. At the same time, she is preparing a few skaters for the first competition of the season.
The B.C. summer skate competition takes place Aug. 14 to 17 in Burnaby. Local skaters competing are Reanna Popp, preliminary; Avery Struck, junior bronze; Caitlin Jarvis, pre-juvenile; and Alissa Harkin, pre-novice. These young women will spend the next few weeks fine-tuning their skills in preparation for the event.
Following the competition is a two-day rising stars seminar that Trevor Smith, Avery and Caitlin (regional development and select team members) have been invited to attend. The camp offers them the opportunity to work with some of Canada's premiere coaches and skaters.
There is currently ice time available for all skill levels at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre. CanFigure and StarSkate programs are running three times a week, and CanSkate programming is running twice a week.
