For the first time in many years, elementary students from School District No. 46 (SD46) were able to compete in a cross-country race on the Sunshine Coast in their school colours.
It was a tradition in the past to have various races throughout the district and it is something teachers and community volunteers are looking to reinstate.
The event was open to all elementary students from the school district. Athletes from West Sechelt, Langdale and Gibsons Elementary represented their schools. It was a rigorous race, just over 3km, with a strenuous uphill climb at the end. It made for spectacular finishes, with the overall top time (unofficial) going to a Grade 5 athlete.
Gibsons Elementary hosted the Season Opener in trails around the community. You could tell that all the athletes had trained hard for the event. Whether the athletes went home with medals or ribbons, they all worked toward their personal best and left feeling proud of their performance.
Thanks go to students from Elphinstone Secondary School and parent volunteers for marshalling the race. A special thanks goes to all the parents for supporting their children in their training.
SD46 students are supported in learning skills and awareness to manage their physical health and the students excel.
