In 1999 a law was passed in Canada requiring that recreational boaters have a Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (PCOC), which is a first step towards acquiring the skills and know-how for safe operation. But this minimum doesn’t cover many situations that a boat operator and crew will encounter. To truly enjoy their experience, all boaters need to learn more about navigation, tides, currents, weather, anchoring and seamanship, as well as marine communications as a certified user of a VHF radio.

These courses are starting Feb. 20 with the one-day Boating Basics for the PCOC. This is followed one week later by four Saturday sessions to extend learning with the Boating Essentials course. On March 31 is the first of two evening sessions on Maritime Radio for the VHF certificate. Course instructors are local Squadron volunteers who are experienced Sunshine Coast boaters as well as being certified by Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons.

In May watch for the free recreational vessel courtesy checks that provide boat owners with a sticker to show they have all required safety equipment. This is valued by enforcement officers who do not need to stop and inspect boats so marked, as well as avoidance of a hefty fine for boaters found with deficiencies.

The Sunshine Coast Squadron has some 150 members who value the benefits of exchanging experiences at social events; receiving discounts on useful marine gear, products and services locally and nationally; and enjoying an active collaboration with Gibsons Yacht Club.
