Runners enjoy cooler conditions

Cool, early fall weather was enjoyed by Run the Rock racers on Texada Island, Aug. 28.

After five years of hot, sunny conditions, most Run the Rock participants were happy to experience cooler weather and showers on Sunday, Aug. 28. Run the Rock continues to draw an international field to Texada Island, with runners from England, Belgium and the U.S., as well as Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C.

The cooler conditions did produce one record. Masters runners Mary Walsh and Rebecca Reid from Vancouver finished tied for first in a women’s record time of 3:35.12.

Powell River’s Alston Miller was first in masters at 3:57.06. Brent Crowle, England, was second master in 3:59.13. Byron Fader from Powell River was third.

Brenda Spicer from Powell River came in third in the open women’s category at 2:10.29.

Kaz Tyabji of Powell River was the first open men’s runner at 1:58.22.

While all marathoners finished Run the Rock’s challenging course, organizers want to especially congratulate Janet Green who completed her 339th marathon!

The 8 km course saw 14-year-old Will Rice of Powell River win the race with a time of 32.56. Masters runner Teresa Nightingale from Halfmoon Bay came in second overall and first in master women’s at 36.18.

Second male and master was Tony Rice of Powell River at 39.29 followed by Jason Hodges from Powell River in third at 45.05.

Adrienne Hodges from Powell River came in second place in the open women’s at 39.56.
