Roller Derby

The Sunshine Coast Roller Girls (SCRG) will return to the Sechelt arena’s flat track on May 14 for their fifth full season of roller derby – and in tow will be a record number of rookie skaters by their side and ready to face the action.

The season opener will be a home game against Vancouver Island’s “Rinx Minx,” which should prove to be an exciting match. Both leagues are creating the opportunities for new players to test out their freshly developed skills.

The SCRG have been training hard since last September with twice weekly three-hour practices, cross training and skill testing. Roller derby is a fast game with lots of strategy and technical footwork required, and can be overwhelming to learn all at once. The rookies are ready to play and join in the world’s fastest growing amateur sport.

Everyone is welcome to come and cheer on the new skaters as they play their first game at home. It will be a fun-filled family event with a great half-time show. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets are still only $10 or $5 for children.

The SCRG are once again sponsoring a community group at their events. Last year they raised over $500 for Arrowhead. This year they are sponsoring the Gibsons Youth Centre.
