Provincial results and a return to sports

Not to be that guy, but WOW! How about that HEAT? The results are in for the Provincial Challenge Games. For eight weeks, athletes from across B.C. exercised, stretched, stayed hydrated, tried recipes – overall just kept keeping on.

Shout out to Region 8 (North & Central Interior) for taking the top spot. Region 5 was not near the top of the provincial standings, but that did not deter our energetic team. Congratulations to Lindsay, Mike, Hailey and Shelley!

Closing ceremonies were hosted by SOBC Athlete Input Council chairman Matthew Williams and featured some celebrity honorary coaches such as Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Emily Zurruer, Darcy Rota, Carl Valentine and Bernie Pascall. The ceremonies were followed the next day with a dance party on Zoom for all participants.

Adopt A Block Campaign raised a grand total of $8,066.49! Thank you to contributors for all their generous donations! Gooooo Orcas!

With the easing of restrictions comes the hope for a Return to Sports. Right now, it’s looking like the time to return is the fall season although the startup may be gradual.

Some very important factors include the number of athletes, coaches and volunteers as well as the availability of venues for the various sports.

At the moment, the tentative date for registration is Sept. 21 with a newer, more streamlined process.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining our wonderful organization, please contact our volunteer coordinator Marney Qually at: ronandmarney@gmail.com.

For nearly a decade I have had the honour and privilege of being athlete reporter for my Local SOBC/SC Region 5. Now, interested athletes from around the province are receiving training and support to take on this role in their own locals.

One of these athletes is Miranda Orth from Nanaimo.

If you would like to read about her training and one of her reports check out this link:

The time for coming together is drawing near. Stay kind. Stay safe. Keep moving!
