The fifth annual Sunshine Coast Summer Classic Water Polo Festival in Ruby Lake attracted a record attendance of 52 visitors who enjoyed the hot, sunny weather and crystal-clear water.

Ruby Lake was the star attraction again. Crystal-clear water and hot sunny weather welcomed back dozens of athletes from the Lower Mainland for a weekend of water polo, played in the middle of one the Sunshine Coast’s most beautiful lakes.

The fifth annual Sunshine Coast Summer Classic Water Polo Festival in Ruby Lake was held on Aug. 20 and 21. Volunteers from the local Sunshine Coast Sockeye Water Polo Club built on successful water polo events of past years and attracted a record attendance of 52 visitors.

Acquiring video footage from an aerial drone was a new undertaking for this year’s weekend.

“We could not pass up the opportunity of capturing video of a lake water polo game in progress from the sky,” event coordinator Darren Molder said. “Seeing the game in action against the turquoise-clear lake water speaks for itself.”

“Visiting players started calling this location ‘Canada’s water polo paradise,’” Molder said. “I couldn’t agree more.  Players did not want to leave the water at the end of a long day of water polo.”

The overall allure of the weekend is beginning to attract families and friends of visiting players who quickly find all manner of great recreational opportunities to explore on the lake and surrounding area.

Once again, Ruby Lake Resort stepped up in fine form to provide accommodations and hosting amenities, and volunteers of Sockeye Water Polo served visitors a highly popular feast of crab and steak.

The Summer Classic is the signature event of the Sunshine Coast Sockeye Water Polo Club. It serves as a fundraiser and promotional vehicle for the club’s youth water polo program, which continues this fall. All proceeds of the weekend are directly channelled towards the purchase of pool time for youth water polo in the upcoming seasons. Adult water polo also continues this fall with regular Tuesday night sessions at Sechelt Aquatic Centre at 8 p.m. New players are always welcomed.
