CALs Crushers and Xenichen Ya Yas put points between themselves and the rest of the women's league with wins this week. Marshall Mayhem extinguished IGA Blazers second place chances with their 4-2 win. Blazers got goals from Dani Thompson and Olivia McLean. Mayhem's last goal was a prime time event, as Brooke Whalen's corner deflected off two Blazers, followed by Andrea Aleong running headlong into the ball and gonging it off the goalpost. At Ted Dixon, Ya Yas edged Gibsons Pigs 3-2.
Miranda Joe, Erika Devries and Kristina Joe tallied for the Ya Yas, with Ginny Blattler hitting the mesh for the Pigs. At Hackett, CALs bested Fusion 5-0 with Tara Sweet and Laura Dixon each scoring a pair with a single from Amy Campbell.
In men's action, IGA Selects managed yet another tie this week, drawing 3-3 with the Xenichen Wolves. Selects' goals came from Glynn Cody, Peter Bramp-ton and Barry 'Super Mario' Krangle, who schooled his mates in the benefits of dogged determination.
Sechelt Chiefs went on another scoring spree in their 6-0 defeat of Gibsons United, with Scott Johnson helping himself to four goals, Kevin August hitting a single and Steve Peel abandoning his defensive duties to run up and score. Pigs beat Pender Bananas 3-1, showing some of their first half form, with two goals from Dean Forbes and a single from Ken Campbell. Rod Kammerle wasn't going to let the Pigs return to the clubhouse with a shutout and ran in on a breakaway to score for Pender.
Coast Progressive United are one week closer to a regular season championship with their 4-2 win over Halfmoon Bay. Longtime local teacher and referee Jim Gray kept things orderly with an occasional finger wag, in addition to his whistle. The game was fast and physical, but CPU's passing game brought them to the net. HMB's keeper Pete Williams played well, with two of the goals coming from rebounds and one off a bizarre bounce. CPU got goals from Martin Blackwell, Fumi Takahashi, Eoin Walker and Kurt Vernon, with HMBs from Marcel Vanderstedlt and a nice header by Jack Bryson.
