The Gibsons Pigs returned to winning form on Saturday with a home win over Capilano.
Gibsons picked up a 15-12 win over Capilano in a friendly at Cougar Field. The Pigs were slated to play a regular season contest with the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Barbarians from Kamloops, but TRU cancelled late in the week.
Pigs club president Scott Fearnley said the game against TRU would most likely be made up later in the month.
"It was nice that the Caps brought up a side," said Fearnley. "It was a muddy, sloppy day on the field, which is ideal for us Pigs. The conditions meant it was tougher for the back line to handle the ball, but our forwards capitalized and I think our backs played very well despite the conditions.
"It was a fun game and there was great rugby spirit back at the clubhouse after the game."
Fearnley said the game allowed Gibsons to cycle in quite a few junior players.
"All the juniors played tremendously well," he said. "It gave them some real in-game experience. The Caps virtually brought up the same squad that beat us by a try a few weeks ago. It provided us with a good test and a good test for the junior players."
Fearnley said in recent weeks, the Pigs have started to play a much more cohesive style and he's seen real improvements.
"Because it was a home game, we had a lot of extra guys on the sidelines," he said. "We've also had lot of juniors out for practice on Tuesdays in Sechelt and our Thursday practices have also been better. Every time we take the field we're showing improvements. I think when the spring season rolls around, this club is in for big things."
The Pigs are slated to play at home Saturday against the Rogues. Kick-off is set for 11:30 a.m. at Cougar Field.
