Do you want to save the Mountain Grind?
For family and business reasons, the founders of the two-year-old Mountain Grind in Pender Harbour are unable to provide ongoing direction for this popular event. If you are interested in seeing the Mountain Grind continue, you are invited to a Save the Mountain Grind meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at the School of Music in Madeira Park.
According to retiring directors Amanda Peterson and Silke Linnmann, the event was successful in terms of participant satisfaction as well as financially. However, it did take an enormous amount of time for the two women to solicit sponsorships and direct the volunteers to create the course and on event day. Last time, 350 people took part in the Mountain Grind, an increase of 10 per cent over the previous year.
At the meeting on Nov. 16, those interested in a third and potentially ongoing Mountain Grind will have access to the financial statements as well as an opportunity to brainstorm future possibilities for the event. Time is tight to put on a successful event in the spring, however, as about two months of planning had already taken place at this time last year.
The Mountain Grind is registered as a not-for-profit society in B.C., and owns assets which include advertising materials, a brand (including logo, and social media), changing tents, obstacle materials, signage for trail, banners, start and finish lines, podium and showers built for the racers, and a manual on how to plan and carry out the event.
As part of its mandate to improve the quality of life in Pender Harbour and foster successful community organizations, the Pender Harbour Advisory Council has called this meeting to find a group of interested participants to continue the direction of the two year-old Mountain Grind event.
