As winter hangs in the air, it's not too early to plan what new and exciting sport you might like to take part in on the Sunshine Coast this coming spring and summer season. For the fifth year now, the dragon boat division of the Gibsons Paddle Club is offering dragon boating on Porpoise Bay.
Dragon boating is an inclusive sport enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels. A dragon boat is a long, thin and very stable boat, up to 16 metres long, with 10 to 12 seats where paddlers sit side by side. A steersperson stands in the back and a drummer up front. Ultimate dragon boating is when all 20 paddlers paddle in unison, and it is done for both pleasure and sometimes in competition. Paddlers on the Sunshine Coast are fortunate to have a most beautiful venue at Porpoise Bay, with incredible scenery and wildlife spotting. There is nothing quite as peaceful as a warm summer evening on the water.
In 2008 the four teams combined forces and participated in regattas in False Creek, Nanaimo, Kelowna and Victoria and a team was formed to participate in the Seniors' Games in Prince George in September. There are many different opportunities available if you are competitive. Or if you would just like to dabble once a week, there are women's teams, mixed men's and women's teams and a breast cancer paddling team.
There will be an information meeting on Jan. 6 at the St. Mary's Hospital boardroom (downstairs) where you can explore this new, exciting and fast growing sport. All are welcome and registration will be available at that time. For more information, contact Shaunna Asselstine at 604-886-0605 or email [email protected].
