The On The Edge Race Club (OTE) has officially changed its name, launched new colours and had a new logo designed by a club member. Sunshine Coast Cycling (SCC) is the new name for the club, and 17-year-old Jesse Horn designed the logo.
"It took a while to fine tune the design, and Jesse worked really hard with club members Reid Page and Darren Quist until everyone was happy," said club president Bob Stanhope. "We're excited about the new look." Once the logo was completed, then the jersey layout had to be perfected. "We had to have it done in time to get the jerseys printed for race season," said Stanhope. "We were still working on the layout and making last minute changes as new sponsors came on board."
But the jerseys have gone for printing and the team is looking forward to having them in time for race season, especially for the home Brodie Rat Race May 5 to 6.
After the Rat Race it's racing just about every weekend through to July with the season winding up at Mt. Washington with the national championships July 21 to 22.
There's also good news this week concerning two club riders who were injured last July when they were hit by a car on Highway 101.
Sean Stanhope and Matt Cottrell are both on fire, and Matt was seen during spring break wearing the sky blue colours of his new sponsor, Aviawest-Rocky Mountain Bicycles. "I've worked on recovering from the accident and getting my body into race condition," said Matt. "My first mountain bike race is going to be the Rat Race and I'm looking forward to that. It will give me a way to judge how fit I am. My bike handling skills are awful right now and I just feel like a bag of rusty nails, but I'm working really hard to get it back." Matt has been riding in Victoria and working with his coach Steve Lund, the same coach who worked with SCC members Sean, Jesse Horn, Katherine Short and Sebastian Sleep at a B.C. Team camp in Victoria over spring break. As for Sean, he's back riding hard and fast, but his race season is temporarily on hold as he awaits the go ahead from his doctors following last July's accident. As soon as that happens, he plans to be a force to be reckoned with.
"We have some new sponsors and some that have come back from when we were OTE," said Stanhope. "We'd like to thank every one of the sponsors that have supported the young racers and the club over the years. The focus of the club is still competitive cycling and we're dedicated to supporting our youth development team. We're hoping to represent the interest of all the cyclists on the Coast, not just the racers."
