New indoor facility taking shape

With the rapid growth of population on the Sunshine Coast and all the development projects proceeding apace, it is only right that the recreational needs of the newcomers and long-time residents alike should be of a high priority.

The Sechelt Aquatic Centre and the Gibsons arena will soon be complemented by the new two-court indoor community tennis facility, presently under construction adjacent to the Sunshine Coast Arena in Sechelt.

This facility, owned and managed by the Suncoast Racquet Club (SRC), will have daily, scheduled blocks of time for use by the community at-large, which will include time for school use and lessons for all ages and abilities. It will also have the capability of accommodating wheelchair tennis players.

In order to operate and continue to improve both the facility and that which it has to offer, the SRC requires more fee-paying members. The limit for two courts has been set at a total of 120 members, thereafter there will be a waiting list for membership, as others leave the Coast or move on to other fields.

Membership fees have been set at a level well below that of most similar facilities on the West Coast and affordable to most who wish to play indoor tennis the year round.

A steady income for the SRC is essential to making this facility a viable concern, not only for present day members, but also for those who have yet to learn that here on the Sunshine Coast, we have a desirable lifestyle and opportunities for filling our leisure moments. The many youngsters already signed up for classes will hopefully grow to enjoy the sport of tennis and instill that liking into their offspring, so that the indoor tennis facility is assured of a long and busy existence.

For further information as to fees, conditions and membership benefits, call Friedl Brudermann at 604-885-9640 or Karl Jung at 604-886-2691. You can also email to [email protected].

Remember, the membership will be capped at 120, so the sooner you call, the more likely you are to avoid having to join a waiting list.
