Midget A Provincials to be held on Sunshine Coast

Minor Hockey

Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association (SCMHA) has been named as host for the 2015-16 Tier 3 Midget A Provincials.

The Sunshine Coast will be the meeting ground for 200 or more hockey players – and their families – competing for the BC Hockey Provincials Championship banner during the week of March 13 to 18.

“We’re in with a lot of A-1 teams from large associations, so it’s going to be really good development for our kids,” committee chair Brenda Rowe said.

In minor hockey, the size of the community dictates the tier the hockey association plays in. The Sunshine Coast is a tier 3 community. “That will never change no matter how good or bad our teams are,” Rowe explained.

“Within each tier, you play in flights. The better you do, the higher the flight you’re in,” Rowe said. “We just finished the placement round where all the rep teams do four weeks of placement games. That indicates which flight you end up in. For the midget rep team, we just ended up in flight 3. I’ve got to go back and look, but I’m feeling like that’s pretty historical for us. I don’t think we’ve ever been flighted that high.”

The provincials will be in the Gibsons and Area Community Centre. The last time the Sunshine Coast hosted the provincials was in 1992 in the Sechelt arena.

“Events of this nature bring substantial financial benefits to our community,” Rowe said. “The committee looks forward to working with our local community to make this event memorable for all who attend.”

Planning will be coordinated through a local organizing committee consisting of current Midget A parents, with oversight from BC Hockey.
