A good weekend of curling was had by all 28 teams who curled at the Gibsons Curling Club’s Men’s Bonspiel that ran from Jan. 20 to 22.
The Bonspiel started at 3:15 p.m. Friday and the final game ended around 4 p.m. Sunday with the Meyer team – skipper Cal Fister, second Murray Day, third Barry Meyer and lead Bryan Fitchell – finishing in first place.
Fitchell is from the Sunshine Coast, while Meyer is a part time resident. Eight local teams competed as well as nine teams from Royal City Curling Club, who have shown great support for the bonspiel every year.
The curling was super all weekend with some great shot making and close games.
Fister made the shot of the weekend in the final A event game. In the sixth end, he made a raise back take out and removed his opponents’ shot rock to score three points and break the game open. The Meyer team is a good hitting team and the Lens team was never able to get anything going after that.
The C event game was a nail biter with Penonzek hitting and sticking to score two in the eighth end and tied, forcing an extra end. With six rocks in the four foot, Kevan Penonzek – with his final shot – ran the opponents’ guard back into the group of rocks clustered on the button. The Penonzek rock was then in shot position and the skip from the Tyler rink had to use his last rock to try to bump the Penonzek stone out to the side. The shot was wrecked on a front guard and the Penonzek team stole the win.
The club is run mainly by volunteers, so a huge thank you to all those who helped out – you all rock!
