Sunshine Coast Boxing Club’s Marcus Davies of Sechelt won the A4K champion’s belt after a split decision win against Cody Robertson of Vancouver.

The Sunshine Coast Boxing Club’s (SCBC) Marcus Davies of Sechelt won a hard-fought split decision over the rangy Cody Robertson of Vancouver at the Athletics For Kids (A4K) fundraising gala dinner, auction and boxing event on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam.

With differing body types and boxing styles, the fighters sized each other up early in the first round. Following the instructions of trainer Randy Hollett, Davies fought his way inside Robertson’s reach to use his infighting skills and shorter, heavily muscled build to his advantage.

In this back and forth fight, Robertson would box at a distance suited to his long arms only to have Davies’ pressure tactics force him into the ropes where he had an advantage.

When the dust settled in the ring, Davies was awarded the beautiful A4K champion’s belt. Both boxers received the applause and recognition of the audience made up mainly of Vancouver celebrities and business persons who came out to support the A4K event.

A4K is in its 15th year of raising money for underprivileged youth to participate in sports.

Davies trains at the SCBC in Andy’s Plaza in Gibsons. For information about the SCBC, contact club president Randy Hollett at 604-989-5180.
