Caitlin Jarvis loves figure skating. Anyone who has watched her skate has seen the joy skating brings her. It radiates out and touches everyone around her. Like most young athletes, she would love to go to the Olympics one day, or at the very least skate at the national championships. Caitlin has worked very hard to be successful in figure skating, and this year her hard work has paid off. She said she owes a lot of this year's success to her coach and friend, Lesleigh Farr. Under Farr's guidance, Caitlin came in second and fourth in both her events at regionals to qualify for provincials, and right before she left, she received word she had the honour of being the first skater from the Sunshine Coast to ever be selected for the B.C./Yukon regional select team.

The regional select team is a provincial team comprised of young identified skaters within each region who have the talent and potential to be successful competitive skaters. All skaters selected to this team have been identified by a talent scout at a series of competitions.

Being selected has obligations and benefits. There is a requirement to compete at the more serious competitions, attend both spring and summer schools, and within a year move into the competitive stream. Caitlin will be required to adhere to a minimum training commitment level set out by the B.C. region. She already skates five days per week, including two days a week during school hours, and would skate more if she could.

With the help of her parents, teachers, principal and coach, Caitlin has managed to incorporate her passion and dedication for skating into her school program. Being on the select team means she will also have opportunities to participate in special training seminars and camps, such as the provincial development team/regional development team seminar in Kelowna in early April.
