The Sunshine Coast Fencing Club (SCFC) may be small but their results are big. Fencers claimed 10 medals at the BC Provincial Championships at the Olympic Oval in Richmond this past weekend.
Coach Jonathan Hutchinson continues to guide his young fencers toward greatness, picking up right where they left off at last year’s championships.
The lone gold medal was won by Caelan Meyer in Y14 Men’s Epée. He beat Daniel Kolkapov of Dynamo Fencing Club 15-4 and will keep the trophy on the Coast for a second year in a row after teammate Fynn Mansbridge-Fafard won it last year. Dylan Stiles was third in the same event and may have his sights on keeping that title on the Coast for 2016 as well.
Fifteen year old Fynn Mansbridge-Fafard, still recovering from an injury sustained at the National Championships one month ago, competed in only one event over the weekend, but reached a new level by earning a bronze medal in Senior Men’s Epée after losing 15-12 to gold medalist Dylan French, who is the top-ranked U20 fencer in Canada.
Caelan Meyer and Dakota Stiles each picked up a bronze medal in U20 Epée, and Stiles also took bronze in U17 Epée.
Mireille Stiles and Sophia Kitson tied for bronze in Y10 Women’s Epée and Sophia also won bronze in Y10 Women’s Foil.
Landseer Enga finished fifth in Y14 Men’s Epée, as did Adao Freedman in Y10 Men’s Epée. Adao and Sophia were competing in their first-ever provincial competition.
Mikaly Newton injured his hamstring during U17 Foil and was unable to continue, resulting in seventh place.
