Kaigan Karate Club in Roberts Creek punched above its weight at the 17th Annual Sato Cup at BCIT Sportsplex in Burnaby. More than 400 competitors and 130 volunteers from Canada and the U.S. were involved. Sato Cup hosted traditional karate events such as Kata and Kumite.

Pictured with Sensei Dallas and Sempei Laurel are medal winners Caio Machado, who unleashed his chi for the youth Gold Medal in Kumite; Quillan Lightfoot, a gifted 13-year-old, took home gold medals in Kumite and Kata; Brodie Mills, 12, took silver medal in Kata plus a bronze medal in Kumite; Michaela Mann, a 10-year-old first-time competitor, won a bronze medal for Kata; and Daymi Amma, 11, showed strong spirit and won a bronze medal in Kumite.

Kaigan Karate Club’s youngest competitor, Ocean Tron, 8, brought home the bronze medal in Kumite.

Lazar Williams – not present for the photo – valiantly fought and won the Gold Medal for men’s Kumite. Williams is a member of the B.C. Provincial Team.

Training sensei Dallas Grieve, Kyle Nygren, Mark Guignard and sempai Laurel Sukkow are proud of their performances, their modesty on winning, and the kindness they exhibited to all competitors.
