Over 70 basketball players from age 13 to over 40 came out on July 22 for the second annual Daniel Kingsbury Memorial 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at Roberts Creek School.
Daniel was a leading basketball player at Chatelech in 2005, and this event was organized by his friend and teammate Tony Dill to honour him and raise funds for The Jellyfish Project, Daniel’s initiative that has educated over 66,000 students across Canada on ocean health and sustainability.
Three youth teams played a round robin that brought Doc Squad and Creeker Ball to the finals, with Doc Squad taking the youth championship title in a 15-10 contest. The adult finalists battled it out in an exciting new king’s court wild card round for a berth in the semi-finals. The Reign Makers and Bad and Boujee advanced to the finals, with Bad and Boujee taking the trophy in an exciting 15-12 win.
This year’s undefeated championship team was led by Elphinstone grad and tournament MVP Andrew Baron, joined by other former collegiate players Chloe Kennedy, Dolf Vermuelen, and Austin Penrose.
The tournament had generous support from the community, reflecting Daniel’s legacy of generosity and community building. To learn more, visit www.thejellyfishproject.org
