Alan Stewart plans to take on the Young Life Iron Man of Golf on June 13, playing through 100 holes of golf in one day and raising money to send local teens to camp.

Young Life Sunshine Coast is participating in the annual Young Life Iron Man of Golf on June 13. Golfers will be playing 100 holes of golf from dawn to dusk and raising funds to help send teens from across the province to summer camp at Rockridge Canyon in Princeton, B.C., as well as to raise a portion of their annual
operating budgets.

As a team from the Sunshine Coast, Alan Stewart and Nikki Ickert aim to raise $20,000 to specifically benefit local teens. Stewart plans to take on the Iron Man golf challenge personally.

“My strategy for golfing 100 holes between dusk and dawn revolves primarily around Robaxacet, sunscreen, lots of golf balls and knowing that people are counting on me,” he said.

Young Life is a non-denominational Christian organization that cares for teenagers in the context of their own world. Young Life leaders are Christians who leave the comforts of their adult lives and enter the world of teenagers.

These leaders are adult mentors who encourage teens to have positive relationships with peers and adults in environments that are accepting and fun filled. Young Life strives to offer positive alternatives that appeal to teens, especially their desire for fun, adventure, and friendship, within the context of a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere.

Stewart said that the time he spent at Camp Elphinstone as a teenager had a profound effect on him.

“There is nothing more important for youth than developing leadership and relationship-building skills before venturing out into the world,” Stewart said. “Camp offers kids a chance to take on new challenges in a safe and supportive environment, as well as build life-long friendships.”

As of Wednesday, Stewart and Ickert had raised $2,450 of their $20,000 goal. For more information, see www.mrsunshinecoast.com
