Granthams Landing man scores gold

Bill Watts of Granthams Landing is festooned with medals after competing in the 2016 US Masters Swimming Spring Nationals last month.

Bill Watts, resident of Granthams Landing and member of the local Sunshine Coast Seniors Swim Team, won a gold medal last month in the 2016 US Masters Swimming Spring Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.

It was a large event with almost 1,800 competitors ranging in ages from 18 to 87 years.  

Watts won gold in the Men’s 70-74 age category in 1,650-yard – 1.5 km – Freestyle with a time of 22:58.80. 

He also did well in his other four races, beating his previous time in each event and finishing with two fourth places, a fifth and an eighth.

Watts expressed his appreciation to the Sunshine Coast Swim Team and staff at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre for their encouragement and support in training for the competition. 

What’s next for the champ? Watts says he is going to enjoy some leisurely swims this summer before planning any more competition.
