The Sunshine Coast Storm U14 Girls’ soccer team hosted the South Delta United for the first game of their regular season at Brothers Park in Gibsons on Sept. 11.

On this incredible sunny Sunday, the hometown girls were literally exploding right from the starting whistle. There was a non-stop push from everyone to make the season opener a game to remember. The fans lined the pitch with lawn chairs and huge grins that only a Storm soccer parent could understand. It was electric and glorious.

The team welcomed four new players this year – Sara Wilson, Mika Shutz, Sora Shibasaka and Abbey Grunenburg. If this game and the new team members are any indication of the year to come, we are all in for a wicked ride. Hold on people, the Storm has awoken again!

Communication on the pitch has improved from last year and the girls rallied with precise attacks and fantastic heads-up soccer. Time and again they pushed hard to the top of the box and pummelled the Delta keeper with shot after shot. This was a ferocity that was missing from a lot of last year’s games.

The Storm’s coordination and teamwork continued through the game, giving Delta little chance to catch their breath and respond appropriately – all they could do was take the ride and hope for the best.

The final score of 4-0 sent our white-jerseyed girls and their elated fans into orbit. Coaches Trina and Zoey broke into smiles that echoed a true sense of pride in everyone’s hard work, truly listening at practice and playing together like a real team.
