The peewee Gibsons Slammerz and midget Crusherz are both having great seasons.
The Slammerz placed third in a tournament in White Rock in late May in their first away tournament for most of the team.In the quarter-finals, Gibsons broke open the game in the 12th inning with the score tied 1-1. The contest took a lot out of the team as they lost in the semifinals, but Gibsons came back to mercy a good team for a third place finish.
Last weekend, Gibsons went to North Vancouver for the district playdowns finishing second. Gibsons had to beat North Van twice in the finals on Sunday. In the first game, the Slammerz stopped North Van dead in their tracks. The bases were loaded, and the tying run was at third in the seventh when Gibsons made the out. This forced a third and final game between the teams. All the ball that day took a little steam out of the girls, and they ended up losing a fairly close game by five runs in the final.
The coaches and parents are extremely pleased with the girls' work efforts and how extremely dedicated they have been this year.
The Crusherz have also had a strong season, attending three tournaments and winning medals in them all. They brought home the third place medal at the end of April from the first tournament they entered in White Rock. Then they claimed first place at the Tsawwassen tournament on the May 10/11 weekend. Playing five games back-to-back on the Sunday, through wind and rain, with only 10 girls able to attend, they never gave up and showed true team spirit.
The May 24/25 weekend found Gibsons playing at Guildford. The fifth and final game on Sunday was against a strong hitting team from Mission. The girls received the second place medallions.
Last weekend had Gibsons playing the North Van Devils at the district playdowns to see who would be attending the provincial championships. Unfortunately the girls struggled with their bats and lost to the Devils. The Crusherz have shown great stamina and teamwork over their short, busy season. The players and parents wish to thank Gibsons Landing Slow-Pitch for sponsoring both the Crusherz and the Slammerz.
