The Gibsons Mark’s Cutters competed for the first time in the Shaw Challenge, on March 18 to 20 in Salmon Arm, B.C.
The tournament was sponsored by the Salmon Arm Hockey School and featured 12 adult recreational hockey teams, mostly from north-central B.C., and from as far away as Grand Prairie, Alta.
The Cutters got off to a good start in the tournament, winning their first game against Salmon Arm with a five-point lead. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to keep the momentum going into the second game of the tournament, losing to Kamloops, last year’s champions.
The hopes of reaching the finals were finally put to rest in a hard-fought game against Sicamous that the Cutters lost by three points.
Despite the tournament result, there was positive feedback from the other teams and organization committee of having a Sunshine Coast team compete in the annual tournament.
While the ice hockey season for adult rec hockey has come to an end, local teams will be competing in the second annual Hitmen Seven-a-Side Hockey Tournament this weekend in Sechelt.
The tournament is hosted by the local Hitmen hockey team and will feature 18 teams made up of a maximum of seven players.
For those interested in taking in the fast-paced action, the tournament takes place at the Sunshine Coast Arena in Sechelt this weekend from Friday, April 1 to Sunday, April 3. For more information, contact Kate Turner at 604-885-7933 or by email at [email protected]
