Winning North Shore league titles is becoming the norm for the Elphinstone Cougars cross country team.
Elphi captured its fifth straight AA North Shore banner with another outstanding season.
The zone finals were held Oct. 29 in Squamish with the girls' race at 4.4 km featuring 85 runners, and the boys' race at 6.4 km with 127 runners.
Elphi's senior boys team completely dominated the race with five runners in the top 10, finishing more than 30 points ahead of second place Sentinel. Top five finishers were Mason Gregory, second; Connor Richey, fifth; Oliver Telfer, sixth; Jon Garmulewicz, ninth; and Brad Adnitt, 10th. Rounding out the team heading to provincials in White Rock are Devon Dunn and Andrew Kraus.
The provincials were held last Saturday, but due to the Remembrance Day holiday, results were not available at press time.
And the accolades didn't stop there for the senior boys as they also won the league trophy, becoming the first AA school to do so in 20 years. Senior boys also ranked fifth in the province according to the high school rankings in The Province newspaper on Nov. 6.
Joining the boys' team at the provincials was Kendra Pomfret, who finished ninth at the zone finals. The girls' team finished sixth overall at the zones in a very competitive race.
The top individual eight finishes based on the four league meets were Holly Perrier, fifth in bantam girls; Alex Cloherty, seventh in junior girls; Kendra Pomfret, fourth in senior girls; Sam Garmulewicz, fourth in junior boys; Connor Richey, fourth in senior boys; and Mason Gregory, fifth in senior boys.
"If the senior boys can run at the provincials with the same attitude and energy they did at the zones, they're capable of a strong top 10 finish as a team," said co-coach Tom Daniels last week, adding that Lexa Pomfret served as head coach this season.
