The Elphinstone Secondary School track and field team had a stellar season, just missing out on another North Shore championship.
The Cougars finished second overall behind Rockridge Secondary School. The girls' team won the overall girls championship, and 10 athletes qualified for the provincial championships set for May 30 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
Those athletes include Christian Jeffery, Clay Brown, Jonathan Garmulewicz, Devon Dunn, Coen Brunson, Kendra Pomfret, Larissa Pletz, Michaela Kane, Tiegan Daniels and Candice Veale.
"Rockridge had a much larger team, but we had some very good results at the North Shore zone finals," said Elphi coach Tom Daniels. "The entire team competed after qualifying through the preliminaries the last few weeks. Many athletes were trying for qualifying times and results for further competition at a provincial level; however, the weather conditions (it was cold and wet) did not allow for the best performances. The team still did well, and to finish that close to Rockridge is a great accomplishment."
Notable performances from the zone finals included Katie Russell finishing first in the 100 metre and second in the 200 and 400 metre in bantam girls. Christian was second in the 100 metre, long jump and triple jump in senior boys. Clay was first in the 100 metre hurdles and long jump and second in triple jump, and the girls relay teams rocked the competition with the senior 4x100 and 4x400 teams coming in first place, and the Grade 8/9 girls 4x100 relay team, competing in the junior category, finished second. Full results are listed in the sports ticker on page B10.
Daniels said Elphi might also have a few Grade 8/9 girls qualify for the Grade 8/9 portion of the provincial championships, but that field won't be determined until later today (Friday) or early next week.
