Elphinstone Secondary beat Pender Harbour senior girls basketball team in a game that came right down to the wire on Dec. 10.
Elphinstone won the ball jump and immediately went to the key. They shot and missed but they got it in on the rebound.
The first period was nearing a close with a score of 10-7 to Elphinstone when the Pender Harbour point guard slightly sprained her ankle. Elphinstone scored again making the score 12-7. The first period came to a close with Elphinstone ahead by five points.
The second and third period came and went with the injured point guard from Pender getting back into the game. Finally in the fourth period the crowd was on the edges of their seats anticipating the period ahead. Elphinstone was winning 37-29 and it seemed like Pender was going to lose by eight points.
With more baskets scored, new plays played and foul shots taken, there were only 15 seconds left in the game. With time running out, Pender Harbour’s Sam Stewart was blocked from passing to her teammates so she shot from outside the three-point line and got it in, ending the game 42-38 for Elphinstone. All players left the court looking accomplished and tired and not wanting to go to school the next day.
