The Sunshine Coast Fastpitch League ended another successful season with a great weekend of baseball. The final of the playoffs had the Cutthroats facing off against the regular season champs, Lon’s Gun Show.

Lon’s Gun Show jumped out to an early five-run lead in the first, but no lead is safe against the strong batting line-up of the Cutthroats. The Cutthroats – powered by Rob Dixon, who had two homeruns – chipped away at the Gun Show lead and eventually tied the game.

Capitalizing on a few Gun Show errors and some timely hitting from Tyler Graham, the Cutthroats were able to take the lead. Mike Husband and Nolan Lewarne hit back-to-back triples to battle back for Lon’s Gun Show, but Therin Hemstalk made a nice diving catch at third to double off Lewarne, preventing the Gun Show from tying the game.

Bill “Stick” Stockwell was able to cap off a well-pitched tournament by getting the final three batters to ground out in the bottom of the seventh. Final score was 9 - 8 for the Cutthroats.

The Beer Cup Final had Gilligans squaring off against Kurty D’s. The absence of perennial Beer Cup champion Custom Carpet – who were not able to find their way back to the Beer Cup this year – meant there would be a new Beer Cup champ this season. In a marathon game, Christina Lewis was able to pitch a gem, leading Gilligans to victory over Kurty D’s.

Thank you to all the spectators who came out to cheer on the teams – it was great to see the bleachers full. “Captain America” even made an appearance to make sure the crowd did not get out of control during the final. The league would especially like to thank Ernie Barnum and his officiating crew for all their work throughout the season and playoffs.
