After four demanding days of competition, local equestrian Sierra Hincks completed the Mustang Powder Back to Back Horse Trials with a strong third-place finish in Chase Creek, B.C. on May 19.

Eventing – also known as horse trials – is an equestrian event where a single horse and rider combination compete against other combinations in three disciplines of dressage, cross-country and show jumping.

“This was one of the best events I’ve ever ridden in,” Sierra said. “The courses were challenging and the rainy conditions were tough.”

The trials lasted four days and consisted of two complete events. Sierra – age 13 – competed in the Pre-Training Junior division on Velocity, her Dutch warmblood horse.

In the first event, Sierra was in seventh place after dressage. She went double clear in stadium jumping – no jumps down and within allotted time – bringing her to fourth place.

The cross-country portion of the event is a challenging timed obstacle course where riders attempt to complete the course within an optimum time. Sierra and Velocity went double clear once again and ended the first event with a second-place finish.

The second event was equally exciting and challenging and the pair finished with a solid fourth-place finish. The combined events led to an overall third-place finish at one of the toughest trials in B.C.
