Following a successful Rudolph Rumble in early December, wrestlers from Elphinstone Secondary School continued to show improvement at a meet at Simon Fraser University (SFU) just prior to the Christmas break.
Coach George Richey accompanied wrestlers Breanna Kittson, Connor Richey, Stuart Richey, Brendan Laird, Thomas D'Arcy, Landon Johnson and Corey Dew to the SFU novice tournament. The novice tournament is held for the majority of British Columbia wrestlers and excludes athletes who have medalled in either the provincial or Canadian championships. Competition is always very tough. Breanna won her weight class, Stuart came second, and Corey was third. The other four came home with a winning record, but finished out of the medals.
"I think this was a fantastic performance by a small and mostly young team," said coach Clint Fox. "Corey was our only senior wrestler and wrestled very well to finish third. Our team continues to build skill through experience and is getting stronger with each competition."
The next competition for the Elphi wrestlers is the Western Canada age-class championships in Kamloops Jan. 18 and 19.
