The Sunshine Coast Coho Kings were off to Ladner for their second tournament of the season, May 23 and 24. The first game was a defensive battle with Mike Sopow on the mound for the Coho Kings facing off against Darren Strang from the Richmond Steelers. The Steelers threatened to score in the third inning but Andrew Baron, Dave Moran and Mike Holmes turned a 4-2-3 double play to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh Mitchell Rainer hit a double off the fence and looked to be the winning run, but the Coho Kings were unable to score him. With neither team scoring, the game went into extra innings where each team starts with a runner on second. The Steelers were able to score their runner to win the game 1-0.
The loss put the Coho Kings into the elimination bracket against the Coquitlam Dukes. Jim Peers was able to keep the Duke bats off balance by mixing up his pitches, and Tyler Craig led the Coho offence, first hitting an inside-the-park homerun and then almost repeating the effort with a triple his next at bat. Tyler was involved with all of the Coho runs, allowing them to win the game 3-0.
Sunday morning Coho faced the Richmond Mariners. The game started off with lots of promise; Coho were getting runners on and preventing the Mariners from scoring, but one bad inning led to the Coho demise and the Mariners went on to win the game easily 7-0. The Mariners continued to roll through the competition, going on to win the tournament.
The Sunshine Coast Men’s fastpitch season starts June 8, with games being played Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Brothers and Hackett Park.
