Sierra Hincks, 13, and her Dutch warm-blood horse Velocity will be competing in the 2016 BC Summer Games.

The Sunshine Coast Equestrian Club (SCEC) is proud to announce that equestrian Sierra Hincks and her horse Velocity have been selected to represent Zone 5 (Vancouver-Coastal region) in show jumping at the 2016 BC Summer Games. This year, the Games are being held at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park July 21 to 24.

“My horse and I have been training hard and we are ready,” Hincks said. “I’m grateful for this opportunity and so excited for the opening ceremonies.”

Hincks, 13, will be competing with her Dutch warm-blood horse Velocity, 10, who stands at 16.3 hands high. The athletes at the Games are 13 to 18 years old and are experienced competitors striving to one day represent Canada at the international level.

The history of equestrian sport dates back more than 2,000 years, and is closely tied to military training throughout its evolution. Equestrian is the only sport in which men and women compete against each other on equal terms, and it is also the only one in which humans and animals compete together.

Sierra trains under Equine Canada Level III coach Jeanine Ellingham from Mason Bluff Farms in West Sechelt. Jeanine has been coaching for the past 50 years and is the equestrian head coach for the 2016 BC Summer Games. Jeanine has volunteered in various zones for the Summer Games since 2008.
