Sunshine Coast mountain bikers showed strong results at downhill and cross-country races in Whistler over the hot and dry June 24 - 25 weekend.
Gibsons’ Ben Fisher took 11th place in the highly competitive men’s sport 15-16 age division in the first race of the BC Cup downhill series. This follows Ben’s 17th place finish at the Gryphon Enduro he completed along with Micah Reid (21st), which covered over 30km of trails and included 1,800 metres of climbing.
Several local cross-country racers also competed in the BC Provincial Championships for cross-country mountain biking that also acted as a stop on Canada Cup Series. Lucy Schick took second place for U19, which is the same as her current overall standing in the BC Cup XC race series.
In between cross-country races, Schick took in several gravity oriented races, winning the Beaver River Classic downhill race in Kamloops for women and placing second for U21 women in the Fraser Valley BC Enduro Series race.
Schick will be looking to build on these results at upcoming downhill and endure races across BC.
Sechelt’s racing legend Kris Sneddon, who lately is spending more time building trails than riding them, finished mid-pack in the Elite Men’s category. Katelyn Button, also racing Elite, place fifth in the Championship race. Button, whose primary focus is racing Xterras, off-road triathlons, will be in Victoria this weekend hoping to repeat her 2016 win among pro women at this stop on the Pan American Xterra Series.
