Aug. 12 will mark the Sunshine Coast Equestrian Club’s annual tribute to a local cowboy legend, Ted Bowe. The SCEC remembers Bowe every year by holding a memorial rodeo in his honour, including barrel racing, pole bending, Coastal Cowgirls performance, as well as a chili cook-off, Calcutta and more.
For many years Bowe ran a local dude ranch, taking city slickers for trail rides, as well as sparking many a young girl’s love of horses. With his no-nonsense and “git ’er done” attitude, his support for local rodeo events was second to none. Bowe eventually left the Coast and passed a number of years ago. Stories of years gone by are shared year after year.
Riders compete for $500 added jackpot in the open division barrel race, running a clover leaf pattern around three barrels. The four fastest riders of each division walk away with the cheque and silver buckle. Prizes first through third place are generously sponsored by local businesses and community members. Other divisions offered are senior (50 and over), junior (18 and under), pee wee (11 and under) and a lead line division for the little tykes.
Calcutta to start at 11 a.m. Race starts at noon.
