The Sunshine Coast Boxing Club (SCBC) hosts their War on the Shore 4 amateur boxing event on Saturday, April 9 at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.
SCBC boxers on the card include George Vourtsis, who will headline in the main event along with Vancouver’s Ari Ashari, with the vacant B.C. middleweight title up for grabs over five rounds.
Nik Stevenson will throw hands with Victorias Donilo Maltivic in a super heavyweight fight with both men weighing in at over 220 pounds. Big bombs are sure to land in this tilt.
Two members of Sechelt’s Red Lion Kick Boxing will make their debuts under the Marquis of Queensbury rules as Marcus Davis battles a 175-pound opponent from Langley and Red Lion coach Justin Paul takes on Victoria’s John Kutz in a 168-pound contest.
In a public spar, Angela Cantarutti of Gibsons at 120 pounds will open the card with a spar with Vancouver’s Sarah Fraske, who boxes at 140 pounds. Both women wanted competitive bouts but opponents willing to travel to Gibsons to face them could not be found, so they will test their boxing skills in a non-competitive match.
Scheduled is another heavyweight bout between Victoria boxers, as well as youth bouts between boxers from Kelowna and Surrey.
The youth boxers under 19 years of age will compete in Olympic-style bouts with headgear worn and the senior boxers will box professional style without tank tops or headgear.
Once again Barry Krangle will be the ring announcer, entertaining and informing the audience for this annual family-friendly, alcohol-free event.
SCBC founder Rick Shannon said, “This is the second title fight held in Gibsons with this version of the SCBC. In 2013 Randy Hollett won the City 147-pound strap and now George Vourtsis takes his shot at winning the BC 160-pound title.”
Shannon added: “I hope locals will support this event. It’s rare that you get to see a local boxer fight for a B.C. title in Gibsons.”
Fight night the doors open at 6:30 p.m., boxing starts at 7. Tickets are $20 at the door. Kids under 12 have free admission.
For ticket and event information, call Randy Hollett at 604-989-5180.
