The Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association’s (SCMHA) first Atom female team won their playoff championship banner in Chilliwack on Saturday.

Chilliwack did not make it easy for the girls. After the first period the score was 2-2. In the second period the Blues took a 4-3 lead, and in the third the girls grabbed two more goals to win the game 6-3.

“All 17 girls played their hearts out,” said Kori Hudrick, SCMHA’s female coordinator. “They worked as a team and won this banner together.”

Hudrick said it’s been amazing to see how far the girls have progressed from the first day they stepped on the ice together. “The growth on and off the ice is so exciting to see.” She said the girls’ confidence has been the most obvious change. “Talk to any parent on the team and they will tell you how positive this hockey experience has been for their girls in everyday life.”

Hudrick said the support of the team’s coaches and parents, the hockey association and community has been vital to the program’s first season. That includes: McDonald’s, Reid Pelly Construction, Coastal Community CrossFit. Coach Conor Lowe and coach Sydney McAllister, SCMHA and Coast Reporter.

“We have been so lucky as a team to have great coaching volunteers and parents. Every one of them made this idea a reality. Without their support of this program we would have not been able to make this happen for the girls of the Sunshine Coast,” said Hudrick, adding, “We can’t wait to see the exciting things that are happening for the 2020-21 season – congratulations Female Atom team!”

It was also a big weekend for the Atom C and Bantam C SCMHA boys teams, both of which took home banners last weekend.
