Last weekend's competition proved to be too much for the Gibsons Bantam All-star team as they dropped three out of four games.

Saturday started off in familiar fashion as Gibsons shut out the Surrey Canadians 4-0.

Game two of the double-header started off well as Gibsons went ahead early, but a determined Surrey club let it be known that there was still a ballgame in play, stealing one 14-13 with a late inning rally.

Sunday proved to be even harder as Gibsons tried to meet the challenge against a well-coached team from Newton who were visiting the Coast for yet another double-header.

Game one was within reach most of the way, but Gibsons just couldn't string together enough hits to do any damage, and Newton took the game 6-2, handing Gibsons its first back-to-back losses of the season.

Determined to get a win, Gibsons took the field in game two and scored early. However, it didn't last, and Newton piled up 11 runs before the home squad finally stopped the onslaught.

Gibsons did show some character and entertained the crowd with a late comeback attempt. Down one run and with two out, Gibsons had a base runner in scoring position but grounded out to the pitcher to end the game 11-10.

"Our pitching struggled, and we didn't hit the ball early - not exactly a recipe for success," said manager Lorne Baron. "But we'll be back on Sunday, and I know the kids will be ready to play Vancouver in our final two games."

Gibsons plays its last two home games on Sunday at 12 and 3 p.m. at Brothers Park.

On the flip side, the Midget squad fared much better last weekend, winning three of four games to run their record to 5-3.

Gibsons split its doubleheader at home on Saturday losing 8-7 to Surrey-Delta, while winning game two 4-1.

On Sunday, Gibsons hit the road and beat Rutland 3-2 and Westside 6-0.

The Midgets return to action today (Saturday) with a double-header against Tsawassen with games at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. then head to Newton on Sunday for a pair.
